Chapter Six -- How Rebellious
Ooph, dear.
Commented Kirri, as he watched Lilytha scrambling up the wall. She was a good climber, better than most, but then she had recieved alot of practice doing... whatever Lilytha did. Kirri was just sitting by a rock, Amber lying down beside him, both watching Lilytha's progress as she teetered over a windowsill then attatched herself to a curve in the wall.
Kirri had managed to bribe his way into doing nothing, even though he himself had recieved the same climbing experience as Lilytha, from their days as children running around in the streets of Jirapa, getting caught by guards (of which they called their 'near escapes'), stealing apples from the Crown Orchard (of which they called their 'dangerous missions') and making up stories on the spot when questioned by those loyal to Asbisan (of which they just wetted themselves laughing when reminded of).
But no, Kirri wanted to keep his feet firmly on the ground, by saying that he wanted to keep watch for Errie. Then Lilytha had told Amber to stand guard so that they had someone sain to keep watch for Errie. So, it was just Lilytha, as she made her way up to the 43rd room in the castle, of which she and Kirri both knew was the so called 'Questioning Room'.
It's a nice life really, isn't it?
Kirri said lazilly to Amber, as he watched Lilytha risking her life up there on the walls without actually having to do it.
Not bad for some.
Amber replied with a smile as she watched her friend to a little twist to squeeze under a badly build part of wall that jutted out. She then proceeded to sit on it and look through the window curiously, then ducked her head down swiftly.
Remind me. Why are we doing this again?
Kirri asked, now picking nearby daisies and shredding them, then letting them waft away on the wind.
Because we're too d**n lazy to do anything ourselves.
Amber replied dismissively, deflecting the daisy petals as they floated her way.
No, no, not that. I mean, why are we saving Taslo anyway?
Kirri asked, not even registering her words as an insult as he continued to shred daisies.
Because it's what we do. Kirri, that daisy just went down my top.
Well get it out then.
Amber glared at Kirri, with a look almost worthy of Lilytha.
Well don't look then!
She said angrilly and kicked him in the shin. Kirri just rolled over, glumly chutching his knee to his chest in silence.
Wasn't planning to.
Good.
Said Amber, laying back down again, and beginning to pick daisies herself.
Why do you always blame me for things, huh?
Kirri asked suklilly as he rolled on his back again.
Oh, I don't know, maybe because you're the one that does these things?
Amber said sarcastically, making a little daisy chain.
Oh. Yeah. Right.
Kirri said, then sat bolt upright again, just as a shout came from above. He jumped up, and so did Amber, looking at the ledge where Lilytha was now perched. She had called down to the two of them, then motioned to the window that she was poised by.
She had found the room.
Just then, there came another cry, and they turned to see Errie being dragged along by two guards, Mush trailing behind her, not seeming to notice that anything had changed. Errie gave Amber a meaningful look, then Amber looked up to the sill, motioned for Lilytha to hurry, and watched as there was a muffled shattering sound as Lilytha broke the window. She then disappeared from sight, leaving the broken shards of what was a window laying on the sill.
Halt! Drop all weapons!
Said an important-type person. He looked at Amber and Kirri carefully, then watched in amazement as they sighed, walked up to the guards and offered their hands to be tied. This was new. But, still, it was an offer worth taking, so he bound them and took them into the castle.
-- --- --
Kirri, Amber and Errie were told to wait outside with a little escort of guards. They were standing outside and elaborately carved door, which they knew to be the so called Questioning Room where Lilytha and Taslo would be standing. If they're plan had gone right, that is.
Amber sighed whistfully and looked to Kirri.
Foiled again.
She said, with such deep sarcasm that it would not be noticed to any that did not know her well. Kirri was one of the few people that knew her, and smiled in appreciation as they watched their plan go perfectly. Errie had sat on the floor and was now finishing the daisy chain that Amber had dropped when she had been taken, tieing it expertly around her wrist. How you can be expert at making a daisy chain I'm not sure, but Errie manages it okay.
There was a long wait as no sound came from inside. A messenger had been sent in to tell the Speakers that there were some people thought to be assosiated with the prisoner taken in this morning, but they had been gone for about an hour now. The guards had been told to keep their positions, but by now they were figiting impatiently. Amber noticed this, and looked one in the eye.
Bored?
She asked simply, and he snorted, not wanting to lower himself into such a position to talk to a prisoner, but not wanting to look stupid by not replying. His compromise didn't work very well, and his fellows sblack personed.
Yes, of course, I forgot, because talking to someone like me is such a let down, isn't it?
She asked him with distain, and he looked down guiltilly. The one who had sblack personed looked at her curiously, so she gave him the same gaze. He looked to the floor, then Amber sighed as a smile spread over her face.
Well, Kirri, Errie, looks like our little plan isn't working as expected. Shall we give Lilytha a little help?
Kirri smiled, and Errie stood up, giving a final little twist to her daisy chain so that all of the daisy flowers faced outwards.
I don't see why not.
Kirri said hapilly, then simply stood up and opened the door, to a cry of suprise from the guard behind him.
Then, lots of things happened in a very quick manner.
Kirri was pushed backwards and knocked to the floor, there was a grunt from somewhere above his head and another thud, an angry shout from Amber, then Lilytha, talking swiftly and quietly. As usual, her words had a somewhat calming effect to a most definately not calm situation.
Kirri sat up, a little dazed, so see Amber giving a last kick to the remaining guard, Errie watching hapilly, without a care in the world. It appeared that Amber had taken out all the guards, but that can't have been hard, because the first one knocked himself out on the glass case of ornaments as he tried to get into the room, and the other two were unnarmed. Kirri looked about him and saw Amber standing above him, Lilytha framed in the doorway.
...and it seems like he awakened something in Taslo's memory. Maybe it didn't work so well?
Lilytha was saying rapidly, that all too familiar gleam in her eye as she spoke to Amber. She then gave Kirri a withering look, and he got up, brushing himself down with a sheepish grin.
I don't believe you sometimes Kirri.
Lilytha said with as much distain as she could muster - which was alot, I can tell you - then turned on her heel and walked back into the room. Kirri looked after her, dazed, to see the window that she had smashed to get in, framed against the afternoon sky. Amber stode past him, then followed Lilytha out of sight.
What?
Kirri asked helplessly to the empty doorframe, then walked in. He uttered a gasp of suprise to see Taslo, propped up against a chest of draws, clutching his head. Errie was kneeling down beside him, bangaging a wound on his hand, but to no avail. The bandages were just staining red.
Oh, nothing.
Said Amber as she settled down next to Errie, looking worredly at Taslo as Errie continued her work, her hands moving like a blur as she ripped of the previous bandages, then took a little blue herb out of one of the many pouches about her belt. She squeezed the herb, and a few silver drops fell down onto Taslo's wound. He flinched, but did not draw his hand away, and as Errie began to bandage again it appeared that the flow of blood had ceased. Amber blew a sigh of relief.
Yes, something.
Said Lilytha moodilly from her place, sitting on the table and watching the three of them as Kirri stumbled into the room.
The first sign of danger, and what do you do? You fall over.
Well someone pushed me.
Yeah, well I thought you were a guard, didn't I? I've been poised by that door for hours. I didn't want to kill anyone, too much mess, so I was just planning to knock them over then kick 'em a few times to knock them out or knock enough sense into them to know not to get up. Either would have done.
Kirri settled himself on the same table, then poked Lilytha grumpilly.
Yeah, but I'm not a guard.
Yeah, and I realised that but... well, when you've been poised by a door with your arm raised for hours you kinda want to vent some frustration, don't you?
There was a muffled sblack person from the draws, and the four of them turned to see Taslo taking his head out of his hands, muffling laughter.
Phew. I thought you'd stay like that all day.
Lilytha said hapilly, then jumped off of the table to sit infront of Taslo. He drew his hand out infront of him and examined it, turning it over and over too look at the bandage. He gave Errie a greatful glance, which she shrugged off.
And I thought you had quick reactions.
Kirri mumbled, still glaring at Lilytha, then quickly looked away as she snapped her head around to glare at him, which was many times more powerful.
And so do you! I could have stopped from pushing you if I wanted to, but you could have jumped away too! In a fight your enemy isn't going to just toss their sword away when about to give a death blow and shake your hand in appology while you stand there like a lemon! Reactions, Kirri, reactions! And when someone knocks you over, you don't just lie there until the battle is finished and wait for everyone else to fight your battles, then grudgingly get up when it's all over! But that's right, you're Kirri, blame it all on me.
Lilytha said, to more muffled sblack person from Taslo. But by this time she was smiling at Kirri. It was impossible to be angry at him for long, through all the time she had known him. Kirri knelt down beside them all with a sheepish grin.
Yup, that's me.
--- -- ---
Outside the smashed window, a girl sat, twiddling her silvery blonde hair, leaning against the brickwork as if it was just a normal patch of grass, seeming to completely forget that if she made one wrong move, then she would fall to her doom. She was listening to the conversation below her with interest, twiddling her hair between her fingers, a thoughtful expression crossing her face.
As the voices faded and the sounds of footsteps came to her actue senses, a smile spread across her little features.
Well.
She said to herself, standing up gracefully on the crumbling wall, her hair now blowing on the wind, her lilac eyes shining.
It looks like Asbidant has some rebels on it's hands.
Commented Kirri, as he watched Lilytha scrambling up the wall. She was a good climber, better than most, but then she had recieved alot of practice doing... whatever Lilytha did.
